Here’s the thing, if there were ANY truth to the “Irish Slave Myth” that Irish historians would gladly back it up and rub it in UK's face every chance they got! The “Irish Slave Myth” is a pseudo-historical situation which conflates indentured servitude and/or convict transportation with chattel slavery. This false narrative was created by a holocaust denier and is often perpetuated by white nationalists or the generally misinformed. (Usually referencing the many times over debunked To Hell or Barbados) To be clear, the “Irish Slave Myth” is false, the sack of Baltimore by Barbary pirates and the Norse slave trade are very real events. Finally, I am a historian who specialises in the rise of sensationalism & the use of print as propaganda in the late modern period. This is very much my wheelhouse. Sources: Shaw, Jenny (2013) Everyday life in the early English Caribbean: Irish, Africans, and the construction of difference. -Donnell, Alison, McGarrity, Maria & O’Callaghan, Evelyn (2013) Caribbean Irish connections: interdisciplinary perspectives. -Hogan et al. (2016) The Irish in the Anglo-Caribbean: servants or slaves? #history #womensrights #irishslavemyth #indenturedservitude #contextiskey
